January means the over use of the saying, “new year, new me.” And although the meaning is a positive one, the actual act should be going on all year long.
For me, I am no longer part of a gym and that’s ok! I find that working out is best done where and when you feel comfortable. I feel alive when I am outside so I take advantage of my beautiful city! Below, I wanted to share exactly what my workout routine is + a few of my helpful tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle.BTW, after shooting these images, we kicked butt doing the Santa Monica Stairs x6 non stop!!
First, a little about me:
I am 5’5 and I have always been active.
I don’t weigh myself anymore but I’m probably around 110 pounds
I like cardio
I had two kids!
No real injuries
I am a non smoker.
My problem area is my Mommy tummy….
Fixing the problem:
I have come from a background of dance, cheerleading and anything cardio. I have always been active and competitive. Lately though, its been hard to workout especially since I quit the gym. It was always hard bringing my kids to the gym because they always got sick at the day care. So, I was faced with a problem. What could I do to get a workout?
I started bringing my youngest (since Ace was/is in school) with me on my workouts. I would carry her in my +Ergobaby carrier and hike or climb stairs. I also jogged with her in the stroller. When it was time for a nap, I would workout at home and do at least 30 mins of non-stop circuit training. I continued this method and soon I forgot about the gym entirely!
My personal Tips:
Get great workout gear. You always feel better about working out when you have breathable, long lasting workout gear. These cute active sneak’z I found at the Zara Sale for only $20!
Find a workout buddy. Accountability is a big part of staying in shape. Find someone who will push you. I always workout with my hubby when he is available otherwise, It’s just me a my two year old. She complains about working out and that’s usually when I’m caring her. Shes such a lazy BUM!
Change up the scenery. You get bored easily? That’s okay. So do I! I find that when I go from week to week doing the same thing, I get discouraged. If I do one day of stair climbing, the next day I will run by the beach or workout at home.
Eat well. Okay, this is a hard one. But I’m not saying you can’t have the things you like. It’s all about balance. I love cookies and coffee so for breakfast I make a healthy meal. Then, I reward myself with a few yummy Trader Joe’s cookies. But not the whole box. Balance!!
Take things one step at a time. You might experience discouragement but its important to know that change comes slowly but the feeling you get after a workout is so rewarding. Plus, you get a natural boost of energy!
Workout with your kids! It can be challenging but kids benefit from seeing their parents exercising. It promotes a healthy lifestyle plus, how cute is it when a toddler tries to do squats?
My favorite at home exercises:
elbow plank with hip twist
seated Russian twist
resistance band donkey kicks
side step lunges
curtsy lunge with weight
side donkey kicks
lunge with leg lift
My workout buddy is super cute!
The Details of what I’m wearing:
Now, I workout two to three times a week. I am not exactly where I want to be but I’m always working towards a goal. One day, these pictures will be my before pics. I want to encourage everyone to get out and sweat because you are worth it! Let me know below if you would like to see more workout posts on MJ&M!
