So the observatory is closed due to COVID. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t go and snap a few pictures. Most of the exterior is open to the public to which you will find people exercising, taking pictures, or using their iPhones to get the best selfie angles.
Historically, it’s an amazing place but visually it’s even more beautiful. The Griffith Griffith Observatory sits high up on a hill which gives you gorgeous views of the city skyline, all the way to the ocean. Today’s weather was pristine since it was windy last night. We could see all the way to the beach. Always check the weather before hand!
One of the things that I was really worried about was parking. There are the signs (as you will see in the video that I’m posting) that say it’s $15 to park for one hour! Isn’t that crazy? But the trick is to get there early in the morning because you don’t have to pay for parking until noon. Around noon is when they start charging. So you can park all along the hill on the way up. The other trick is to get there very early in the morning. We got there at 7 AM on the dot and parked very close so that we could walk back and forth easily. There’s pay stations but they aren’t working until noon. So my personal suggestion is to get there as early as possible.
Also, when you’re there in the morning there’s nobody in your way. You can shoot on either side of the observatory with ease. The sky is just lighting up around 7 o’clock which provides a beautiful atmosphere! Around 8 o’clock people really start coming in. Finally, you’re going to want to note that you cannot go to the back of the Observatory which is one of the most coveted locations. They have it boarded up right now to keep people from gathering.
Our trip this morning was a success. And I hope with these tips you will be able to go visit with peace of mind. Keep an eye out for our next shoot which we already have picked out in a beautiful location in Burbank! + For more tips, follow me on Instagram and TikTok.
